GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. It is a technology used to create, manage, analyze and map all kinds of data. GIS integrates spatial information (“Where is it?”) with other descriptive data (such as “What is it?” and “Who observed it?”)
Some examples of GIS in action are:
- Using routing location to find a safe drivable pathway from point A to point B
- Collecting location and other information about power lines in the field
- Sharing a web map to highlight art installations on the Capitol Campus
The GIS Program at DES provides services to help you in all of your spatial project needs. In addition, we can provide access to the agency GIS platform so that you can develop your own spatial products.
